As with many of us, some of our much-loved childhood passions are lost to the rigors of growing up. In a way when the world came to a standstill due to the pandemic, it gave us time to be with ourselves and to our joy many of us rediscovered those old forgotten passions. Same is with author Kirti V, an IT professional turned teacher. In her preface she mentions how she began writing again and how it led to her debut book ‘Tides of Life’, a collection of poems.
The book has 31 poems. So, it is a breeze read. The best part is the simplicity of the language which makes it an enjoyable read as you are not forced to sit with a dictionary. The other good thing is that the book is a collection of Kirti’s thoughts, experiences, ideas and wishes arranged not in any particular order, perhaps reflecting her journey, as she penned these poems down, and hence are not monotonous. You never know what’s coming up next and that keeps it interesting. The print quality and font size also aid in reading the poems with ease.
The poems are written in free verse with emphasis on the content rather than a particular form of poetry, rhyme or syllables. They talk about subjects like relationships, love, the hardships faced by humanity, change the only constant, body shaming and many such topics which flit and float in and out of our lives. Hence you will find these poems very relatable.
Some of my favourite poems are –
Outside My Window
Wrapped in a thin blanket,
The sky looked coy,
As a bride under her veil.
Me, The Familiar Stranger
It was me, lost to mundane chores,
The mirror showed me
And I became my own – Familiar Stranger.
Natural Therapy
The season’s first snow was here,
And the child in me was all excited.
A dull evening got transformed
Into a wonderful date with snow.
The Betrayal
I betrayed your trust
Oh! My dear daughter,
I failed in my promise,
To safeguard every moment of yours.
Let us see which way the tides of life turn for Kirti and what comes from her pen henceforth. I look forward to more from her.
