It was an amazing feeling to have my story ‘Atka’ selected for the prestigious anthology. When I had read their first book ‘Hawk’s Nest’, I was completely bowled over by the high standard of the stories and had ever since vowed to work on my craft, so that when the next book in the series came out it would have my story.

So, when Atka, my malamute made it to the pages, I was overjoyed. This story is non-linear in narration with the flashbacks in italics. It takes us on Atka’s maiden journey where he leaves his home for a big outdoor adventure with Paul his master, and two of his mates. The story starts with a vicious attack by the wolves on the party of four. What happens then? Does Atka survive the attack? Do he and his friends make it back home?

Here is an excerpt from my story –

There was complete chaos. The pack attacked from three sides. Kaskae and Amak stood poised to defend. Paul shoved me towards the sled. I hid under it quivering. Then standing between Kaskae and Amak he raised his hands and screamed. The four wolves were undeterred. Their fearsome howls turned to angry strides, kicking up snow. In no time they were upon us. Jaws snapped, bit and ripped into flesh. Yowls of pain were accompanied by desperate attempts to retaliate. The pristine white snow, was splattered with red. They had warned me about this.

“You don’t understand, a hunting trip up on the Rockies is very dangerous. Amak and I have been doing it for years,” admonished Kaskae.

“Please! Take me with you. I have been training hard. I am not an alpha but I am not a rookie either,” I pleaded.

“Yeah! Spoken like a true rookie.”
